I escaped a Mammoth snow storm, and as we await summer (or even spring, for that matter) I find myself at our beach house in Oxnard, California. Even here, I’m bundled up because the winds are cold and made for collecting sea-glass, as I did this morning on the beach a short exploration. I am still on a running hiatus after the London marathon, but I’m looking forward to a lot of running-related activities coming up. My husband Andrew and I will be making our way up to Napa this week to be with our friends at ASICS as they host magazine editors there. Andrew is organizing a 5K run on a vineyard, followed by a couple of days of hiking, biking, a hot air balloon ride…and I’m assuming some wine tasting.
If you have the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon or Half Marathon coming up in San Diego, I look forward to seeing you there. With just over three weeks to go, make sure you have an idea of what you are going to be racing in. Have your shoes and clothing picked out. Know that the shoes and socks won’t give you blisters and that your top and shorts won’t cause chafing. You have put in a lot of work to have something as annoying as a tank top chafing your arm pit to keep you from having an awesome experience.
The expo is a fun place to purchase some great running gear and gadgets, so go nuts…you deserve it. My advice is only that you use your expo purchases for YOUR NEXT marathon preparations. That’s right, you’ll do it again. If it’s your first marathon or half-marathon experience, you are about to gain a very healthy addiction to running and racing. Now, back to clothing. Your racing outfit could be the one you chose for all your long runs because it was comfortable (and good looking). It could be your team’s singlet, but make sure you’ve practiced in it. You may even ask your local running store for some Chafe Free Powder.
I’m off to Napa and I’ll have a glass of wine for you since you’re still in training. If you want a fun gift for your marathon friends or for your post-race party, try www.finishlinewine.com.
