This Saturday was my first run back after the London Marathon three weeks ago. I can’t imagine having more fun than beginning my summer season running through Trefethen winery in Napa, California. ASICS and Oakley hosted magazine editors for a wine country weekend. We received the latest Oakley shades and ASICS shoes as well as older vintages of Trefethen Wine.
Our Saturday morning started with stretching led by Andrew and me. Next was a 5K run through the vines of the ever-so-beautiful vineyard. The Trefethen family was out in full force challenging the rest of us. They clearly had an advantage knowing every meter of their 500-acre property. We received race shirts, massages and endless glasses of their Dry Riesling and Spa Treatment cucumber soup. Just as the day seemed perfect, our run was followed by a Trek bike ride up the Silverado Trail and over to Domaine Chandon. Under a perfect 70-degree sky, we sipped eight different sparkling wines followed by a dinner on the property.
This is just a taste of our perfect weekend in wine country. Joining us in Napa was our 14-year-old chocolate lab, Aspen. She was just as excited about the weekend with such dog-friendly places. At Trefethen, Aspen followed the winery’s golden retriever Remy. I think Remy’s mileage Saturday morning came close to my weekly total during marathon training. After a long morning of running around, Aspen found comfort in the courtyard flowerbed while Remy preferred the water fountain. The rest of us chose another serving of Dry Riesling.
The weekend was a fun combination of activities, delicious food and great wines. All my passions packed into a few days. It’s amusing to me to call weekends such as this as “work”. I have a similar giddiness when I crawl into bed for a mid-day nap. In fact, a nap sounds good after this action packed weekend.
And, yes, I’m sore from a mere 5K run. Back to work.
