As I type this a summer rain has swept in to cool off the heat and give us some moisture. It rarely rains here so we welcome it with open arms. The rain is clamoring off our metal roof so loudly that it may encourage a post-blog nap.
Summer in Mammoth is in full swing. There are so many high school camps up here right now and it has been fun to catch up with them and welcome the runners to our mountain town. I had a great run yesterday up at the lakes basin and we ended up spending the day up there. My husband and I brought our canoe and paddleboard up to Horseshoe Lake and met some friends for a picnic. It was a beautiful day.
With all the fun Andrew and I have, there is still a void of not having Aspen to share these epic days with. I enjoyed throwing sticks in the water for the other dogs running the shoreline.
We still have great things planned for the remainder of the summer if you find yourself escaping to this running paradise. August 8th is the Footloose 10K, which attracts runners of all ages and abilities to tour our town by foot. Also, August 5th, 12th and 19th the Mammoth Track Club will be hosting Thursday talks in Shady Rest Park. Here you can chat with Ryan Hall, Meb, me and others in this relaxed setting. Check the local paper when you come into town for more information. September 18th is the Moeben Mammoth Ultra Marathon. This extreme and scenic course offers 35K and 50K distances. If you are interested in local running practices or racing, visit www.highsierrastriders.org.
I look forward to my run tomorrow and can’t wait to hit the trails now that the rain has settled the dust. The air is clean, the trails are packed, the intense heat has mellowed. There is a summer buzz running through town thanks to all the athletes who frequent here. Come join us!
